Mighty Wanderers have said they will be on alert as the season reaches its climax considering Silver Strikers’ history in match-fixing allegations.

The Nomads will host the Bankers in Balaka tomorrow in a decider and general secretary David Kanyenda said they will monitor their players in case the Bankers toy around with the idea of oiling the palms of their players.

The Bankers will be crowned champions for the third successive season, if they win or at least hold the Nomads.

“Memories are still fresh of what happened two seasons ago when Silver were implicated in match-fixing allegations and there were revelations that some of their officials attempted to bribe an Escom United player to help them win the league championship,” said Kanyenda.

He, therefore, said they have issued a stern warning to the players not to be tempted into match-fixing should they be approached by Silver officials or their agents.

“It is not that we do not trust our players, but we just want to play it safe because you cannot be sure of Silver. We have young players who can be enticed.

“To that effect we have collected mobile phone numbers for all our players and should there be need, we’ll approach mobile phone companies to provide us with the numbers that they [players] would have communicated with. We are not leaving anything to chance and that is how serious we are treating Saturday’s game,” said Kanyenda.

He said should they win, they could manage a top-four finish and qualify for a prize in the event that Kamuzu Barracks lose to Blue Eagles.

However, Silver GS Mike Tembo laughed off Kanyenda’s sentiments.

“We have invested a lot of efforts in order to reap the rewards. We win our games on the pitch and not through dubious means. We are being very professional.

“We are just focusing on the game and keeping the spirit together,” said Tembo.

Silver top the log table with 50 points while the Nomads are fifth on 45 points.

  1. Silver strikers as a club should never take this lying down irrespective of the outcome of the game tomorrow. This has gone beyond normal football banter it borders on character assassination. Why is that in Malawian football any one can say anything any how irrespective of the reputation damage that does to the league. You cannot just drag people’s or organisations names in mad without substanciating those claims without hard evidence. Its unfair and dangerous. Some of these officials should realise that what they say has far reaching consequences than they seem to realise.
